Sergei Magnitsky: The British Can Do Something
This afternoon, MPs have the chance to debate a motion to introduce visa restrictions and other sanctions against around 60 named Russian officials who are alleged to have been involved in the killing of the lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in November 2009, as well as the criminal scam that inspired this, and the cover-up which followed.
Magnitsky was a young lawyer who discovered the following. The official documents of a firm he represented were stolen during a police raid, and then used to fraudulently re-register the company, which then illicitly claimed a $230 million tax rebate. This was paid out in a record 12 hours one Christmas Eve. The proceeds disappeared through a maze of phoney companies operating in international tax havens.

VOTE ON TORTURE BAN
MPs are to vote this week on a motion calling on the Government to freeze the assets of the Russian officials involved in the death of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and ban them from entering the UK.
The US State Department has already banned them from entering the United States and frozen the assets they have there.
Magnitsky, who worked for British hedge fund Hermitage Capital, died in a Russian prison in 2009 after being tortured. MP Denis MacShane warns against investing in Russia
A former minister for Europe has urged the Government to attach “health and safety” warnings to promotional material that encourages businesses to invest in Russia.
Denis MacShane, Labour MP for Rotherham, has written to Lord Green, the trade minister, in protest at a conference scheduled for today and sponsored by UK Trade & Investment that will promote Skolkovo, billed as Russia’s Silicon Valley.
Citing the damage caused to companies by “corrupt officials in Russia”, he wrote: “It seems irresponsible for British companies to be putting themselves in harm’s way without full disclosure about the tragedies that could befall them in Russia.

First EU country imposes sanctions on Russian officials
The UK has become the first EU country to impose sanctions on Russian officials implicated in the murder of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, a British daily reports.
Opposition MP Chris Bryant told The Guardian on Saturday (1 October) that UK immigration minister, Damian Green, from the ruling Conservative party, has confirmed they were quietly put on a visa blacklist.
“From conversations with Damian Green, I took it that these people would not be welcomed. It seems now as if there is a secret ban on these people,” he said.

Secret visa bans over death of Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky
Up to 60 Russian officials implicated in the controversial death of a whistleblower have been secretly banned from entering the UK by the British government.
Lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was working for Hermitage Capital Management, a British-based investment fund, when he exposed a tax fraud worth pounds 144m, the biggest in Russian history.
After making accusations against Interior Ministry officials, he was arrested and then died in police custody after being denied medical care. Human rights activists say that the father-of-two was tortured and badly beaten in the hours before his death in November 2009. John McCain, the former US presidential candidate, and others have called for sanctions against Russian officials implicated in Magnitsky’s death.

David Cameron urged to get tough with Russia over Sergei Magnitsky’s death
PM should use Kremlin visit to raise the case of whistleblower lawyer’s death, say politicians from US and UK.
Former US presidential candidate John McCain is among a number of senior American politicians urging David Cameron to bar from Britain dozens of Russian officials implicated in the controversial death of a whistleblower.
The prime minister arrives in Moscow on Monday, his first visit to the Kremlin, amid mounting international pressure to follow the lead of the US by introducing visa bans for individuals linked to the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.
The 37-year-old was working for a British company when he exposed the biggest tax fraud in Russian history. After accusing Interior Ministry officials, Magnitsky was arrested and died in police custody after being denied essential medical care. Investigators say the father of two was tortured and badly beaten in the hours before his death in November 2009.

British MP Urges Russia Visa Restrictions Over Magnitsky Case
British Member of Parliament (MP) Denis MacShane has called on the British government to place visa restrictions on Russian officials accused of involvement in the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who died in prison in 2009.
“What the United States government has done is to list 60 Russian officials who are named in connection with Mr. Magnitsky’s death and I’m urging the British prime minister, as our other British MPs, to do the same thing,” MacShane told RFE/RL’s Russian Service.
