Russians’ views on reasons for Magnitskiy’s death diverge, poll shows

Interfax

Around one-third of Russians (31 per cent) have admitted that they have never heard about the death of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergey Magnitskiy in a pre-trial detention centre, sociologists told the Interfax news agency.

Meanwhile, those who know about this incident and are watching the [development of the respective] events, cannot unequivocally say who is guilty of his death. This was revealed in a survey carried out by Levada Centre experts in 45 regions of the country between 19 and 23 August.

Of those polled, 18 per cent believe that Magnitskiy’s death came as a result of the actions of investigators, whom he accused of embezzling state funds. Another 14 per cent are sure that topmost government officials, who were threatened by Magnitskiy’s exposures, condemned him to death.

Ten per cent of respondents pointed to inhumane conditions at Russian pre-trial remand centre in connection to Magnitskiy’s death, while 9 per cent accused doctors of negligence, for not paying due attention to his illnesses. Only 5 per cent of people believe that no-one is guilty of Magnitskiy’s death and that this is “a tragic coincidence”.

Thirteen per cent of survey participants struggled to answer the respective question.

In July, Levada Centre found that the situation around Magnitskiy is familiar to some extent to 60 per cent of Russians, with half of the respondents (49 per cent) doubting that those complicit in his death in pre-trial detention would be punished. микрозаймы онлайн займы на карту https://zp-pdl.com/best-payday-loans.php https://zp-pdl.com/best-payday-loans.php unshaven girls
