A hedge fund’s four-year fight against an alleged Russian tax scam has taken a tragic twist with the death in prison of one of its legal advisers. .
Sergey Magnitskiy, who had been advising Hermitage Capital, died on Monday night in Matrosskaya Tishina detention centre in Moscow, where he was held for almost a year.
“Sergey Magnitskiy was refused bail and kept in detention for a year without trial,” Hermitage said in a statement. “He was denied the ability to see his mother and his wife and speak to his children for the entire time of his detention.”

A lawyer representing William Browder, the foreign investor who was barred from Russia, has died in a Moscow jail amid an escalating war between the activist investor and the Russian government over claims of tax fraud and corruption.
The death of Sergei Magnitsky, 37, on Monday night will reignite questions over Moscow’s campaign against Mr Browder’s Hermitage Capital Management, once Russia’s biggest foreign portfolio investor, just as it seeks to entice investors back into the country.

A lawyer who advised Hermitage, once Russia’s biggest investment fund, has died in custody amid a row between the fund’s co-founder Bill Browder and the Russian authorities over alleged tax frauds.
Sergei Magnitsky, 37, who advised Hermitage while at law firm Firestone Duncan, died of heart failure on Monday, Russia’s Prosecutor-General’s main investigative unit said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW — A 37-year-old Russian lawyer for an international investment fund, Hermitage Capital Management, died in a pretrial detention center on Monday, nearly a year after he was arrested in an escalating feud between the Russian authorities and the company, Russia’s Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.
The lawyer, Sergei L. Magnitsky, who was in charge of the tax practice at the Moscow law firm of Firestone Duncan, died of toxic shock and heart failure in the prison hospital, said Irina V. Dudukina, a spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry’s Investigative Committee.

Russians Gripped by YouTube Video Claims of Government Role in Hedge Fund Scam
Thousands of Russians are watching a YouTube video that accuses their government and officials of high corruption.
A Russian version of a video by Hermitage Capital, the London-based hedge fund claiming to be victim of a $230m (£146m) scam, has attracted over 12,000 hits, and is the most viewed news clip on YouTube in Russia, the site shows. The English version has had almost 8,000 viewings.
William Browder, head of Hermitage Capital, hopes the video’s international impact will put pressure on the Russian authorities to listen to his claims of theft, gangsterism and government corruption.

Hermitage Points to RenCap in Fraud Case

Hermitage Capital Management, the hedge fund battling state corruption in Russia, has accused Renaissance Capital, one of Russia’s leading investment banks, of possible involvement in two alleged frauds costing the Russian taxpayer $337m (£204m).
In a testimony filed by Hermitage’s lawyer in a New York court, the hedge fund claims there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to suggest that RenCap and its former directors, including Stephen Jennings, the “Kiwi oligarch” who founded and is chief executive of parent company Renaissance Group, may be “implicated in the tax rebate fraud”.

US Court Allows Hermitage Subpoenas in Russia Fraud

A fund that was once one of Russia’s largest foreign investors will be able to subpoena records from U.S. banks to help track $230 million that it claims was stolen by Russian officials and laundered through New York, according to court documents.
A judge ordered that attorneys for Hermitage Capital Management may subpoena JP Morgan Chase Bank (JPM.N) and Citibank NA (C.N) for testimony and records relating to wire transfers that Hermitage said will aid its four pending cases in Russia.
