Prison as a death sentence

Author: Zoya Svetova

The death in custody of Sergei Magnitsky in November shocked the world and mobilised President Medvedev into a promise of reform. Yet, as a second death tragically illustrates, the system has remained essentially unchanged: brutal, dependent and secretive.
The system of Russian justice is well organized and punitive in its nature. It consists of three elements, bound together by conspiracy: the investigation process, court and prison. People who fall into this mill rarely escape unscathed.

New Death in Moscow Jail Renews Calls for Reform

The New York Times

For months family members, lawyers and doctors of Vera V. Trifonova pleaded with officials to grant her furlough from prison to seek medical help. Crime and punishment; If Russia won’t act against senior officials who steal and kill, maybe the State Department can

The Washington Post

ONE THING the Obama administration’s “reset” of relations with Russia hasn’t changed is Moscow’s imperviousness to accountability for criminal offenses by its government at home and abroad. The regime of Vladimir Putin rivals those of Iran or Syria for murders or acts of terrorism outside its borders, including hits in London, Vienna and Dubai; it also has persecuted or confiscated companies with Western owners or shareholders. In no instance has it accepted responsibility. Russian hit men charged by foreign police and prosecutors brazenly serve in the national parliament.

Russia Criticized Over Jail Death Probe
