New Death in Moscow Jail Renews Calls for Reform
For months family members, lawyers and doctors of Vera V. Trifonova pleaded with officials to grant her furlough from prison to seek medical help. Suffering from severe diabetes, Ms. Trifonova, a businesswoman in jail awaiting trial on fraud charges, had only one working kidney, and her lungs were filled with so much liquid that there was a danger she could drown in her sleep, her lawyers said.

Activists Demand Inquiry
Human rights activists are calling on authorities to open a murder inquiry into the death of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in pretrial detention in November. “Magnitsky died of systematic torture and not of negligence,” Valery Borshchyov, of the Moscow Helsinki Group, told reporters Thursday.

U.S. Senator Urges Clinton to Ban Travel for Russian Officials to USA over Lawyer’s Death
A U.S. senator has urged U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to impose a ban on visas for 60 Russian officials and other individuals in a $230 million corruption case that lead to the death of a Moscow anti-corruption lawyer, the U.S. Helsinki Commission website said. “I am writing to request the immediate cancellation of U.S. visas held by a number of Russian officials and others who are involved in significant corruption in that country and who are responsible for last year’s torture and death in prison of the Russian anti-corruption lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, who testified against them,” Senator Benjamin Cardin, the Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) wrote in his letter to Clinton.

Moscow Helsinki Group: Magnitsky’s Murderer’s Must Be Brought to Justice
Officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs who organised the unlawful arrest, prosecution and torture in pre-trial detention of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky must be brought to trial, a statement issued by Moscow Helsinki Group said.
According to Grani.ru, the statement signed by Ludmila Alekseeva, head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, cites evidence collected by the Public Oversight Commission for Human Rights Observance in Moscow Detention Centres. The Public Oversight Commission examined the details of the criminal prosecution and death of Sergei Magnitsky, as well as facts set out in 450 appeals submitted by Magnitsky during his time in confinement in pre-trial detention.

Russia Criticized Over Jail Death Probe
Two prominent Russian human-rights advocates Thursday accused authorities of dragging their feet in the investigation of the jailhouse death in November of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer working for a U.S. investment fund. Valery Borshchev, head of an independent advisory commission legally empowered to monitor human rights in prison, said prosecutors and other investigators haven’t responded as the law requires to a scathing report on Magnitsky’s case his panel issued in December.

Russia Called to Probe Police Role in Magnitsky Death

One of Russia’s leading human rights activists has called for the prosecution of Russian police officers involved in the torture and death of anti-corruption lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky.
Mr Magnitsky, who represented Hermitage Capital Management, the hedge fund run by Bill Browder, died in prison after being held for 358 days without trial on tax evasion charges.
He had previously testified about the involvement of Russian police officers in the alleged theft of $230m (£150m) of taxpayer funds. An investigation was launched into his death following public outcry, but its focus was on the failure of the On Thursday, Lyudmila Alekseyeva, the founder of the independent Moscow Helsinki Group, called for an inquiry into the police officers alleged to have brought “the criminal case against Mr Magnitsky and used torture against him”.
