Russia’s investment rewards carry risks
Mention investment and Russia in the same breath and responses are likely to vary from concerns over corruption and political intervention to the allure of cheap prices.
Russia has been the laggard of the Bric quartet [Brazil, Russia, India and China] that has attracted investors in the past two years. But while emerging market funds have seen $7bn of net outflows this year, according to EPFR, a global data provider, flows into Russia have been picking up. Inflows to Russia total $1.22bn in the year to date, against outflows of $2bn for China and $980m for India in the same period, EPFR data show.

MEPs slam Kremlin for human rights abuses ahead of Putin visit
A few days ahead of the Russian government’s scheduled visit to Brussels to meet with the EU executive, members of the European Parliament have expressed its strong concern about what they consider the malfunctioning of the Kremlin’s systems of governance and justice. The Liberals even spoke in favour of imposing restrictive measures.
In its draft motion for a resolution on the rule of law in Russia, the ALDE group called on the member states to consider imposing “an EU entry ban” on some sixty Russian officials involved in the death of Sergei Magnitsky. This Russian lawyer died in prison after he was held in prison for a year without charge. The Liberals also “encouraged” the EU’s law enforcement agencies to “cooperate” in freezing these officials’ bank accounts and other assets.

BP Made Faustian Deal With the Kremlin
The recent deal between BP and the Russian oil and gas giant Rosneft was a Faustian pact that was forced on the London-listed major by the Kremlin, William Browder, a fund manager with Hermitage Capital, told CNBC Tuesday.
In mid-January, BP agreed a deal with Rosneft which would give it access to offshore exploration in the South Kara Sea and at the time BP CEO Bob Dudley told CNBC the deal offered huge rewards to BP given the access they would get to new fields and reserves.

Doubtless, there will be a good deal of talk about modernising the Russian economy and extolling the virtues of investing in it. Reference will be made to large investments made by BP, Pepsico and other multinationals as evidence of the “improving investment climate”.
